Current Research
The genealogy of the Clan Charteris is being compiled on the collaborative genealogy website WikiTree. The Clan Charteris category can be found here. This page lists the WikiTree profiles associated with the Clan Charteris. This is a work in progress.
A one-name study of the Charteris family has been registered with the Guild of One Name Studies and can be found here.
Some branches of the clan, Charteris of Kinfauns and their junior branch Charteris of Cuthilgurdy, are included in The Red Book of Scotland, genealogist Gordon MacGregor’s excellent genealogical encyclopaedia. Further information can be found here.
Older Research
The last comprehensive history of the Charterises of Amisfield was written in the 1930s by R.C. Reid. It is entitled Charteris of Amisfield, Its Cadets and Cognate Branches (Dumfries: Courier Press, 1938). This is a rare book in print, but online copies can be found.
In the 1700s, Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie published his The Baronage of Scotland, Containing an Historical and Genealogical Account of The Gentry of that Kingdom (Edinburgh: Bell and Bradfute, 1798), commonly know as Douglas’s Baronage. Pages 150-153 contain a genealogy of the chiefs of Clan Charteris.
